The Nutcracker
Performances of the ballet, The Nutcracker(Pytor Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) are popular in the United States, and across the world at this time of year. In some ways, the performance is beyond words. But we try anyway. What a great way to use/exercise our language! Children (and adults too!) can study the story beforehand, learning new words in the target language. After experiencing the dance, students can research vocabulary to express how the dance made them feel and think.
And the learning shouldn't stop there. Combining dance with storytelling is electric. If I could dream of an ideal semester
of language teaching- I would include performance after performance of various genres all to experience and then to share ideas about in both spoken and written form!
